| Peking University boasts a long history in political research. At Jing Shi Da Xue Tang (the Metropolitan University), the predecessor of Peking University, the specialty of politics was already established. After the People's Republic of China was founded, China's political research experienced a tortuous development period. Peking University reestablished the specialty of politics in 1982, restored the Department of Politics and Public Administration in 1988, set up the Political Development and Governance Research Center in July 1998, and founded the Institute of Political Development and Governance of Peking University in July 1999 in a bid to give full play to the theoretical superiority and make in-depth research of important theoretical and practical issues in political development and governance. On December 26, 2000, the Institute of Political Development and Governance of Peking University was endorsed as a Key Politics Research Base, one of the 100 key humanities and social science research bases approved by the Ministry of Education.
